The Sisons

Welcome graphic

JOSE ACOSTA SISON (PEPING) was born on 04 May 1920 to DR. PIO TAVORA SISON and ROSARIO SAMSON ACOSTA in Bautista, Pangasinan. He is the fourth among fifteen siblings. The others are: RAFAEL (deceased), CARMEN, JESUS, ANGEL (deceased), ANTONIO, MANUEL, CONCEPCION (Sr. MARY TERESA of the Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration), TERESITA, JUAN (deceased), LUIS, MA. PAZ (deceased), RAFAEL, DOMINGO, and CHARITO (deceased).

PEPING had his elementary schooling at the San Alberto College in Dagupan, Pangasinan and spent his high school years at the Nueva Ecija High School. He graduated from the Ateneo de Manila on 16 March 1940 with an industrial technology degree.

PEPING spent a lot of time with his family in Bautista, Pangasinan where they had extensive landholdings reaching to the adjacent towns.

PEPING joined the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) in 1940. During the Japanese occupation period, he used to commute from Bautista, Pangasinan to Lubong, Umingan, Pangasinan where his maternal grandmother, EULALIA SAMSON (LOLA YAYANG) lived. After some time, LOLA YAYANG evacuated to Niogan, Sta. Maria, Bulacan with SALUD DAYAO (ATE SALLY) to escape the encroaching Japanese Army which was on its way to the city of Manila. From their evacuation point in Niogan, Sta. Maria, Bulacan, ATE SALLY brought LOLA YAYANG to Maliolio, Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija.

PEPING regularly commuted by carretela (horse-drawn carriage) from Lubong, Umingan, Pangasinan to Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija and finally to Manila. During one of these trips, he stopped at Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija to fetch LOLA YAYANG to bring her back to her house in Lubong, Umingan, Pangasinan. While in Sta. Rosa, Nueva Ecija, he stayed with ATE SALLY and her family.

One afternoon, ATE SALLY and PEPING went to MELCHORA EBRO MANUBAYS (LOLA ECHO) place. ATE SALLY and LOLA ECHO enjoyed close ties because they were both active in the Catholic Womens League and in the fund-raising activities for the parish of St. Rose of Lima Church under MSGR. FERNANDO LANSANGAN. It was at the house of LOLA ECHO where PEPING met RAMONITA EBRO MANUBAY (NITA) who was only fifteen years old at that time.

NITA was born on 25 October 1927 to FERNANDO TUAZON MANUBAY and MELCHORA MILITANTE EBRO. NITA had an older sibling, RODRIGO (RODY). NITA spent her kindergarten and grade school years at St. Pauls College along Herran (now Pedro Gil) and proceeded to Assumption Convent Herran (now the Robinsons Ermita Commercial Complex) for her high school education. She took up Pharmacy, initially at the University of the Philippines, but eventually graduated from the Manila Central University.

LOLA ECHO used to invite ATE SALLY and PEPING to her house everyday until PEPING became a frequent visitor. PEPING and NITA used to go to Cabanatuan (the capital and premier city of Nueva Ecija) and to Jaen, Nueva Ecija to play duckpin bowling. PEPING was a constant companion wherever the MANUBAY family went, even when the latter travelled to Sta. Ana, Manila. Because of this daily contact and togetherness, they grew fond of each other and PEPING became attached to NITA.

When school activities commenced, PEPING went to the MANUBAY residence in Sta. Ana, Manila every night to tutor NITA in her subjects. This closeness intensified their feelings for each other. On week-ends, the two watched movies with NITAs cousin, CONCEPCION EBRO (INDAY), as chaperone. In all of NITAs social commitments, PEPING always served as escort and chaperone. Their favorite theme song was Tango of the Roses. They usually dated in popular restaurants along Escolta and Binondo. They were also fond of watching NCAA basketball games.

PEPING and NITA, upon mutual consent, married on 22 January 1949 in the Catholic Church of Bacoor, Cavite with the late FR. PEDRO UMANA (PADRE EDRING) as the officiating priest. They spent their honeymoon in a hotel along Isaac Peral St. (now United Nations Avenue).

PEPING was then working as a chemist at La Tondena Distillery in Tondo, Manila. NITA meanwhile was studying Pharmacy at the University of the Philippines.

In the late 1940s, PEPING transferred to RJ Gonzalez, Inc. which manufactured Myrurgia perfumes under license from Spain. He was its chief chemist and in July of 1950, PEPING was sent to Barcelona, Spain to train at the laboratory of Myrurgia. PEPING stayed in Spain for three months and returned to the Philippines to establish the factory at 44 Gilmore, Quezon City. Before he left for Spain, he transferred his family from Lopez Jaena St., Paco, Manila to 1938 Herran (now Pedro Gil), Sta. Ana, Manila. In 1961, they moved to their own house located at 1951 Diamante Extension, Corner Pasig Line, Sta. Ana, Manila.

After his retirement from RJ Gonzalez, Inc., PEPING served as consultant to Corona Bazaar along Rizal Avenue in relation to their perfumery line and soap products. Later on, he served as consultant to the PE family who set up a factory in Mandaluyong City for the manufacture of soap and perfumes.
